Children Reading To Children!

We read a variety of books out loud every day in kindergarten.  Reading aloud is such a wonderful way to help children develop a vocabulary, spark an interest, practice active listening, to experience different genres and of course for enjoyment!  In kindergarten we take turns reading books that are 'Just Right" for us.

This afternoon Mrs. T. visited kindergarten and read us a wonderful story called: "The Crayon Box That Talked".  After the story we worked in small groups and created our own world.  We practiced sharing and taking turns.  These are some of the differences that the children came up with that make us special; tall/short, different ages, some of us are black and some of us are white, curly hair, straight hair,we wear different clothes, crayons don't have legs, but we do, we have hair, but crayons don't and finally we all have our own things we do like abilities and ideas.

Showing Our Emotions!

Mrs. T. saying hello!  Everyone went around and introduced ourselves.  If we wanted to we could share a feeling too.
Here is what our minds might look like when we are in mud mind, clear mind and sparkle mind!
This afternoon Mrs. T., our guidance counselor visited our classroom.  She will visit on Monday afternoon for 3 more weeks.  We read a story about our emotions.  We talked about when we feel happy, sad, etc. and how we feel inside too!  Mrs. T. showed us special bottles that represent what our minds look like when we are in mud mind, clear mind and sparkle mind.  Be sure to ask your child to explain this to you!

SKYPING ON DOT DAY!

Saying Hello!
Can they see me?

During our library time on Wednesday we watched Peter Reynolds live read us the story he created; "The Dot".
On Friday, we SKYPED for the very first time with another Kindergarten class in South Burlington.  We were able to share some of the things that we did to celebrate Dot Day.  Our new Kindergarten friends in South Burlington created dots using hyper studio.  Their pictures were really nice.

A Caterpillar Museum!

Today in Kindergarten we created a caterpillar museum.  We reused an old cardboard box and turned it into a display area for our caterpillars and their habitats.  In the video you will hear what a habitat is.  We shared a lot of great ideas about why it is important to take care of animal habitats.  One idea that was shared was; "If we don't take care of our planet, the animals will have no place to live."

Whole Body Listening With Ms. Heather!

Mrs. D using her eyes to let someone know she is ready to throw the ball.
This afternoon Ms. Heather read us a great story about "How To" listen and why it is so important.  She showed us how to listen with all of our body parts.  We played a game using only our eyes!  We had to look at the person we wanted to throw the ball to without talking.  She shared pictures of speech bubbles and thinking bubbles with us too!  Now we know when we are thinking and when we are talking.  Thanks Ms. Heather for helping us learn to listen with our whole bodies.
